What Does Learning To Play The Piano And Learning To Catch A Fish, Have In Common?

Piano and notes
You have probably heard the saying…”give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a life time.”  The principle is that it is more valuable to teach someone to do something than to do it for them or simply show them what you can do.

Have you had more show and less teach in your lessons?  Can you play a song that you were shown but can’t apply what you learned to anything else?  If you have had this experience I can teach you what you need to know to play the songs you want to play.

What you need is music theory for the non-music major.  That is theory applied to playing music by ear.  There are hundreds of teachers that will start you on a note base piano learning journey which is great for playing sheet music but not so much for playing on a praise team.  Most of what you see musicians play in bands is scripted in the form of chord sheets, lead sheets, or song maps but not a written notated performance.

What they have learned, and I want to emphasize learned, because people tend to minimize musicians who “play by ear” and glorify those who read sheet music.  Both had to learn their craft and the great ones actually learned both methods.  But my focus is on the non-performance pianist.  What the “play by ear” musicians have learned are the fundamentals of how music works.  They have learned the scales, chords, progressions, and patterns that form the structure of western music.  Not just the technical facility to play them, but how they work together to make the music you hear.  This is what I consider learning how to fish and being able to eat for a life time.  As a subscriber I will be providing you with access to information that will teach you how to play songs at the piano.  Once you learn how, you will be able to play the songs you like for a life time.  Subscribe and let me show you how music works!!!
